If London is the heart of the Harry Potter books, Edinburgh is the soul. Despite growing up in England, most of the writing of the Harry Potter novels took place in Edinburgh. While J.K. Rowling had already began Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone before moving to Edinburgh in 1993, clues to her inspiration for the wizarding world can be found all over Edinburgh, from the old graveyards to Edinburgh Castle itself.

In the old cemetery next to Greyfriars Church you'll find the grave of Thomas Riddell, a 19th century gentleman who died in 1806 aged 72, as well as the grave of his son, also called Thomas Riddell. Could this be the final resting place of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named? Harry Potter fans seem to think so, with letters and tributes being left at the grave in recent years.
Also in the graveyard you'll find the resting place of poet William McGonagall, who is said to inspired the name of Professor McGonagall, the head of Gryffindor.
